5 Ways to Set the Tone for Your Week

JESSICA LIS, WELLNESS EDITOR

Jessica Lis is the Wellness Editor for The Wellness Refinery’s online blog. She graduated from Temple University with an English Degree and a concentration in Creative Writing. When she’s not writing for the blog you can find her cozied up next to a book or riding her bike around the city.

We’ve all been there. The sun starts to set on Sunday and the scare starts to kick in. Obsessing over the work week ahead with a packed schedule, trying to figure out how you’ll fit in time for yourself… Well, forget about the Sunday Scaries and focus on 5 different ways to set the tone for this week!

1. Grateful Heart Journal by The Lamere

Gratitude journals are known to reduce stress levels and anxiety. I challenge you to start your morning by writing 5 things you are grateful for and end your day with 6! Feeling stuck? No worries this journal provides you with prompts to stop and notice the things around you - breathe and be grateful. Unleash your creative energy and reflect on the world around you.

2. I Am Everything Affirmation Cards by I Am & Co

Set the tone for your week with this affirmation card deck. Pick a card in the morning before your cup of coffee (or matcha!) and remind yourself that “I AM [ambitious, perceptive, a creator]....” With 30 cards to choose from, I challenge you to pick three a day! Or take it further than a week and set the tone for your month.

3.Bath Bomb by Essential

Ditch your shower for the day - soak away your stress with a bath bomb. Light some candles, throw on some music and find your zen with this bath bomb. This bath bomb will be sure to help manage your pain while you enter full relaxation mode. Bath bombs are known to reduce inflammation so take a soak after your sauna and your vibe will shine.

4. Ignite Your Light by Jolene Heart

This is a self-care essential! Start off this book by taking a “Define Your Energy” quiz that helps you figure out how to get through the day without facing burnout. This book unpacks old habits and offers simple shifts that will improve your long term happiness and release negative energy. There’s nothing this book doesn’t cover from relationships to food to skincare to self-care rituals, you name it.

5. Copina Co’s Matcha Beauty Collagen

Copina Co (a personal fave of mine!) has a matcha flavored plant based collagen blend that is vegan, keto & paleo-friendly. Matcha Beauty helps your body naturally produce more collagen without consumption of animal based products. Here at TWR we love matcha because of it’s calming yet energetic effect. It’s perfect to kick start your day and keep you going all day.

Team Tuesday: Meet Nona

featured employee of the week: Nona

Role: TWR's Assistant Manager, self care expert and ashleigh’s right hand woman in recipe development!

  • Astrological sign? Aries, April 7th

  • Music, mediation or podcast in the sauna? No music- I like to zone out and enjoy the sauna

  • What's one song you can't get out of your head? Sunny by Biig Piig

  • Go-to snack or meal post sauna? Meal post sauna is def Tomo (local old city sushi byo restaurant so close to TWR!) Anything with unagi I absolutely love. My go to snack is probably jalapeño artichoke dip from Trader Joe’s with pita chips (yum!)

  • Which chromotherapy sets the mood for your sauna sesh? I love red (supports circulatory and nervous systems), blue (promotes relaxation used to relieve headaches, colds, stress) or green light (associated with healing) with no other lights on. But most of the time I just shuffle the colors on the auto setting

  • Post sauna shower: hot or cold? Deff cold shower post sauna

  • Which TWR drink best matches/describes your personality? I love the energize. It’s so refreshing and clean. Not too sweet nor bland

  • Favorite thing about working at TWR? One of my favorite things about working at TWR is making the smoothie and recommending products to clients or walk-in customers. But my absolute favorite thing at TWR is creating and brainstorming upcoming drinks—we have some pretty cool things that we are working on behind the scenes ;)

  • Self-care essential you can't live without? Hmmm… do I have to pick just one?! I’d say exfoliating with TWR dry brush and using vitamin c daily as a part of my skincare routine. Most importantly using sunscreen daily (reapply as needed!)

Our Wellness Editor Took Plant Based Collagen for a Month and Here's the Scoop...

Over the course of a month I’ve been drinking Copina Co.’s Cacao Calm Plant Based Collagen Booster. Not only is it a delicious treat for breakfast, it has multiple health benefits. Collagen protein is incredibly beneficial for your hair, skin, and nails. As we age we lose our ability to produce more collagen thus this boost helps keep our joints healthy, hair healthy, and skin happy. Cacao calm contains ashwagandha which is best known to reduce stress and anxiety.  It also contains Bamboo Extract & Amla which are the key ingredients for healthy hair, skin, nail, and joints. The hyaluronic acid in it hydrates the skin and helps fight wrinkles. Cacao promotes healthy digestion, helps lower blood pressure, reduces inflammation throughout the body, and can reduce risk of diabetes. Cacao Calm Beauty Plant Based Collagen Booster is vegan and cruelty free. I used a different recipe every week to spice it up but Cacao Calm Beauty Plant Based Collagen Booster is also delicious paired with plant-based or dairy milk.

Week 0: I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed and stressed at work. Nothing too major but definitely experiencing stress and anxiety from working in an office during a pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased symptoms of anxiety disorder considerably among people in the United States. Cacao Calm contains ingredients that help boost your mood and allow your body to de-stress.

Week 1: Iced Mocha Latte (my own at-home version of The Wellness Refinery’s Super Mocha

Monday: Chocolate Smoothie

Tuesday: Wellness Refinery’s Mocha Latte (served warm)

Wednesday: Chocolate Smoothie

First Impressions: Cacao Calm is DELICIOUS. It’s chocolatey with the perfect touch of cinnamon. It comes with a little scooper so you know exactly how much to put into your coffee, milk, smoothie etc.

Jess with her Cacao Calm Beauty Plant Based Collagen Booster latte.

Week 2: Monday: Overnight oats for breakfast before work

Wednesday: Cold latte

Friday: Overnight oats

Overall: My nails feel noticeably stronger. My nails have been recovering since DECEMBER when I had acrylic nails. My moods are relatively stable; my highs are not too high, my lows are not too low.

Week 3: Monday: Chocolate Oat Milk (excellent option if you’re super busy; easy & delicious)

Tuesday: Peanut butter toast with Cocao Calm sprinkled on top

Friday: Cold Latte

Overall: I’ve been super stressed out and dealing with a lot at work, at home, almost everywhere I go. Usually stress causes me extreme anxiety but I’ve been able to manage it. I feel a lot calmer when I’m put in a stressful situation. Instead of panicking, I take a deep breath and come up with a plan. Ashwagandha, a star ingredient, lowers cortisol levels, the stress hormone in our brains. According to Healthline there was a 60-day study with 64 people who reported chronic stress. Those in the group that took ashwagandha daily reported a 69% reduction in anxiety and insomnia, “compared with 11% in the placebo group”.*

Week 4:

Sunday: Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Tuesday: Overnight Oats

Wednesday: Iced Latte

Friday: Chocolate Milk

My experience with Cacao Calm was so great that it’s become part of my weekly routine. It’s too easy and too delicious not to drink/eat! Keep in mind it works best when you regularly drink it. For me 3 times a week is enough to see noticeable changes.

Cacao Calm Overnight Oats

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

½ tsp instant coffee regular or decaf

½ cup choice of milk a little warm

1½ tsp cacao or cocoa powder

1 tbsp maple syrup

Mix all ingredients into container, cover and store in fridge overnight!

MUSH: Oat My Gosh, They're so Good!

Oats have become incredibly popular, seemingly overnight! Oat based products are taking the world by storm & rightfully so. Not only do oats have incredible health benefits but oat milk is thicker and sweeter than most non-dairy milks. Oats are exceptionally rich in fiber and antioxidants; they are great for your digestive health. And, research shows they lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol.

Oats are also a great source of protein in the morning! We all know mornings can be hectic, why add another chore to your list? Healthy breakfast on the go can seem impossible. Enter MUSH Overnight Oats. With MUSH you can get all the health benefits from oats without the preparation.Oatmeal is considered to be one of the healthiest breakfast options. MUSH has 6 different flavors to choose from so you will never get bored of your overnight oats. You can even dress them up with a fruit, nut or granola topping!

Oatly Oat Milk—the official Oat Milk of the Wellness Refinery—is a delicious addition to any latte or smoothie; chocolate, cold brew, tahini, matcha you name it. By now you get it, oats are incredibly versatile—dare we say the new cauliflower? or chickpea? They are the perfect ingredient in your favorite grab-and-go snack item at TWR—Granola Butter Truffles (*recipe included at the bottom!)

Our Golden Oat Cold Brew Smoothie is the Oat Champion of our menu! It is blended with oat milk, cold brew, oats, cashew, coconut yogurt, dates, chia seeds, turmeric, ginger & cinnamon. Oat milk is a great addition to this smoothie (and all smoothies in general, duh) because like we said it is thicker and sweeter than most non-dairy milks. Oatly Oat milk creates a light and refreshing texture for our smoothie; perfect for the summertime buzz to get you through those longer days. So why not treat yourself to an oat milk smoothie post-sauna? The health benefits of the infrared sauna combined with the oat milk smoothie are an unstoppable duo.

The Wellness Refinery is teaming up with, MUSH, to step up your oat game. We will be doing an in-store sampling this weekend, May 21-May 23rd in our Old City location. With the weather getting warmer overnight oats are a cooling way to get your oat fix!

Hot Mom Summer: 'Tis the Season of Sun, Saunas and Self-Care

The Wellness Refinery caught up with some amazing Mamas just in time for Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day is all about celebrating Mother figures around the world and locally. Especially now that the pandemic has changed parenting in a big way, heck..it changed EVERYTHING. People now more than ever are focusing on self care, whether it’s a bubble bath, drinking tea or watching a movie...These local mama’s shared all of their tips and tricks for staying sane during a pandemic and taking care of oneself (while taking care of others!).

“Now that I don't have the time it has drastically changed my self care routine. Mother’s Day feels like Christmas this year because Mother’s have worked over time”

Self care is so important and it’s definitely something we learn to do while we’re growing up. Practicing good hygiene is the one of the fundamentals of self care but it’s also more than that, it’s being in touch with yourself and your body as you grow and learn about the world around you…

Do your kids know what self care is?

“We’re really big on introducing our kids to everything we do” “Making sure they understand taking time for yourself is necessary and needed”

Where do you go when you need 30 minutes of peace and quiet or to treat yourself?

“In the shower”

On Mothers Day Would you Rather…..Breakfast in Bed or Brunch Reservations?

How can local businesses support mothers and the community?

“As a mom we see the world in a different way… I can go to the mall but then I have to travel in and out of small doorways that don’t allow me to really fit a stroller through. I wish more small businesses took the time to ask what moms need. How can we make this more accessible to them?”

How has the pandemic switched up your self care routine?

“I read five books during quarantine one of which was one of the longest books I’ve ever read”  And keeping up with morning workouts! “This morning I did a 6 AM workout and I felt so much better”

“Probably my car”

On Mothers Day Would you Rather…..Breakfast in Bed or Brunch Reservations?

“Brunch Reservations - I love going out to eat! Parc or Talula's Garden”

As far as caffeine goes are you a Matcha Lover or Coffee fanatic?

“Funny because I NEVER drank coffee or anything coffee flavored until quarantine (lock down + a wild toddler will do that). While I occasionally have coffee, teas are still my go-to and I LOVE matcha!”

How has the pandemic switched up your self care routine?

“It went from something that was materialistic to something that’s become very basic and super intentional… self care is being by myself in my bathroom and just brushing my teeth”

Do your kids know what self care is?

“My 16 year old is getting more familiar with the aspect of self care… it’s about doing things that make you feel good and if you don’t think anybody is gonna like it or no one else is doing it it doesn’t matter”  “With my younger kids we’ve been focusing on hygiene”

“When I talk to my kids now it's not a ‘you have to do this because I said so’ it’s more so ‘don’t you want a clean house? Clean houses make us feel good.’”

How can local businesses support mothers and the community?

“I feel privileged that I have a car… [businesses can] think more about areas where there is that disadvantage, maybe you're a business in Graduate Hospital you’re close enough to the neighborhoods like Point Breeze and Newbold, so, can you do pop ups? Can you lower the cost of whatever you're offering?”

“Providing more education… [for example] intro classes so people understand what it is your business is about and why it would be good for them”

Do your kids know what self care is?

“I encourage him [Levi] to feel his feelings and take deep breaths...We have this book called The Little Monkey Calms Down and it’s about this little monkey who drops his ice cream and he starts getting mad and sad and angry and it says ‘it’s okay little monkey it's okay to cry’ or ‘calm down monkey cuddle with your blanket and take a deep breath’ and then we take a deep breath together”

Transitional Skincare: How The Seasons Affect Your Skincare Routine and Everything You Need To Know

As we transition from winter to spring it’s important to know how to change your skincare routine accordingly. I interviewed skincare experts to see what exactly you should be changing about your routine for the warmer months. These tips and tricks will help guide your routine for a seamless transition as days get longer and the UV index climbs higher (yay sun!).

Warmer weather = sweat. Does sweating cause clogged pores? No, this is a common myth. Lynn Gallagher of LGHT Wellness explains that “sweat is a naturally detoxifying and purifying process”. It helps balance the pH of our skin therefore clogged pores don’t correlate with sweat. Sweating purges the skin of bacteria, dirt, and impurities so remember to carry facial wipes if you’re on the go. Ursa Major’s facial wipes are perfect for the warmer months because they clean, exfoliate, soothe and hydrate your skin all in one wipe. Facial wipes are especially important if you are wearing a mask because bacteria and dirt can get trapped underneath. When in doubt choose cotton masks. And when it comes to washing your mask make sure you use a gentle, unscented detergent.

Although sweating is not a problem, the colder weather tends to dehydrate the skin and Dasha Danekyants, local licensed esthetician, points out, “hotter days can induce an excess amount of oil production in the skin”. Exfoliating throughout the warmer months should remain consistent if you are prone to oily skin. Dasha recommends “modifying the type of exfoliant and making sure the acid percentage is less than what you use during the winter”. If you are using a chemical exfoliant, Dasha recommends p50 toners from Biologique Recherche and using it consistently. Lynn prefers avoiding chemical peels or chemical exfoliants in the warmer months because we are more vulnerable to irritation and burns from the sun. If your skin is dry or a bit of combination, shy away from chemical exfoliants in the warmer months or use them less often.

It is important to tune in to your skin and notice the subtle shifts in the skin’s oil production and heat. Lynn recommends balancing this out by cooling your skin internally and externally by consistently hydrating the skin barrier and performing therapies such as ice rolling or cryotherapy. A cryotherapy facial (cryofacial) is when a machine pumps liquid nitrogen directly onto the face. It is a quick treatment that freezes the skin. It is known to enhance exfoliation of dead skin cells on the surface on the face, thus brightening skin, increasing collagen, soothing inflammation and tightening pores. Definitely opt for lighter, water based serums and moisturizers the summer months as opposed to oil based serums and moisturizers.

Wearing sunscreen is imperative year round but as the UV index increases and the weather gets warmer it’s essential to know when to apply and how much to apply. Lynn recommends SPF 30-50 for any and all skin types.

What exactly does SPF 50 mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. If the SPF is labeled 50 then your skin can last 50x longer in the sun without burning than it would without sunscreen. Lynn breaks this down for us; “if you typically notice your skin tone changing (or burning) after 5 minutes to fill sun exposure, an spf 50 would only hypothetically allow you 250 minutes (a little over 4 hours) in the sun without harmful damage from UVA/UVB”. There is no evidence that SPF over 50 is any more effective. Sunscreen should always be the grand finale of your skincare routine. Make sure you are covering your face, neck, chest, ears and anywhere else on your body exposed to sun.

*Quick Tip!: apply enough product to cover the length of your middle and ring finger to ensure you are using enough sunscreen to protect your skin.

Reapplying throughout the day is crucial, Lynn recommends carrying facial powder or SPF mist. Dasha recommends carrying a facial powder if you’re someone who wears a full face of makeup and reapplying throughout the day.

But how often should we be reapplying? According to Dasha,  “at least twice a day if you’re being exposed simply from car or house windows. If you’re spending the day at the beach or pool, reapply at least every hour”. You can use powdered sunscreen to touch up throughout the day on your most sunburn-prone areas. For example, nose, upper forehead, and midface. Powder is great but should not be used as your base for the day. Whether it’s powder, mist, or cream sunscreen we must be consistently using it on our skin, regardless of the season.

As for a tried and true Spring Time skincare routine, Lynn recommends the following:

Step 1: Double cleanse: apply a light oil to remove makeup (such as sea buckthorn, rose hip, jojoba, and avocado or aloe)

Step 2: Apply non-foaming liquid or herbal cleanser all over the face for approximately one minute, rinse gently

Step 3: Apply rose water-based toner or herbal hydrosol

Step 4: Apply a safe Vitamin C or hyaluronic acid for reducing photo damage and ensuring hydration

Step 5: Apply a non-nanoparticle physical sunscreen or a moisturizer with a chemical sunscreen (SPF 30) and an SPF lip balm!

Note that double cleansing is crucial year round but is especially important in the warmer months. Dasha recommends using micellar water throughout the day if you are prone to oily skin. She points out using micellar water is  “especially beneficial after working out, wearing a mask for a long period of time or just being in humid environments”.

Last but not least; spring cleaning! Remember to clean out and swap out your expired products. Check for a number on the bottom of the product. If it says 12M it means your product is good for 12 months after opening. If there isn’t a label look, smell, and feel your product to notice any changes.

How to practice self-care while in quarantine with The Wellness Refinery

Common is expanding in Philadelphia! With fully-furnished suites, all-inclusive utilities, household essentials, and an incredible location, we will have two new coliving buildings, as well as one building with completely private unfurnished apartments, open in the city of brotherly love by the beginning of next year.

To celebrate, Common set out to get to know some of their neighbors, and quickly found that Philadelphia was filled with entrepreneurs passionate about cultivating community within their own expertise: just like The Wellness Refinery

The Wellness Refinery is a self-care haven focused on making wellness accessible to a wider range of individuals outside of overpriced spas and health-cafes. Their team aims to bring awareness and emphasize the importance of self-care for physical, mental, spiritual, and community well-being.  Their Philadelphia location offers infrared sauna services, organic beverages, and sells the highest quality natural wellness products.

Common caught up with The Wellness Refinery founder, Ashleigh, to learn more about how her business started and her top tips for practicing self-care at home.

Hi Ashleigh! Can you tell us more about how The Wellness Refinery started?

Ash.png

The Wellness Refinery began out of a personal desire for greater wellness offerings and a larger wellness community in Philadelphia. After completing my undergrad at Temple University in Philly, I completed graduate school with a Masters in Applied Clinical Nutrition and while working my first full-time job at a functional medicine practice in New Jersey. In 2018, I moved back to Philly after finishing my degree and immediately felt that something was missing. I couldn’t find a place that allowed me to treat myself to some of my favorite forms of self-care on a budget! Of course, there were plenty of workout studios and over-priced spas I could spend an entire day at, but an affordable space to rejuvenate for one to two hours didn’t exist.

I was also unable to find somewhere in the city that offered infrared sauna therapy, something I was deeply craving once I moved back to Philly. All of these realizations pushed me to explore the possibility of opening an infrared sauna studio in the city and take the next step in my career.

The beginning days were filled with a great deal of market research, learning more information about infrared saunas, and looking at commercial properties in desirable neighborhoods. As I began to check out properties, I came across a space that was once an old cafe and it hit me: ‘How cool would it be to have a place where you could sauna and grab a smoothie or juice on your way out?’

I was thrilled about the idea of incorporating community into a wellness space and I started to focus on creating a welcoming space for ALL individuals interested in health and wellness. Depending on a customer’s preference, you could come sweat and grab a drink, or meet a friend and catch up over adaptogenic lattes. Once this was established, it was also important to me to empower our community to continue self-care beyond our doors through wellness routines and rhythms. So, I incorporated a retail component for individuals to shop all things self-care and keep the care going in between their visits to The Wellness Refinery.

How did your business have to shift during the pandemic?

There were so many shifts! Not only were we dealing with closure due to a pandemic, but we simultaneously had massive ceilings leaks. Our team was going through building repairs and navigating a novel virus outbreak all at once. It took us a few weeks to get our heads on straight and shift focus. Once we did, we launched our online retail store, and we’re so grateful to now be able to reach a larger audience across the country that we may have never reached with our brick-and-mortar shop alone. This has also allowed us to start working on our in-house brand and prepare for the launch of The Wellness Refinery’s first product line!

Once we felt comfortable enough to be back in our space and building repairs had been completed, we transitioned to online ordering and curbside pick-up drink service from our Tonic Bar. We also launched our new DIY Smoothie Kits (watch their IGTV tutorial here) that allowed people to still get the nutritionally delicious smoothies they loved at home!

Eventually, we were able to reopen our space to welcome in sauna goers. We reinforced our thorough cleaning procedures, extended downtime in between each sauna session, and shifted our schedule to minimize guest contact in-store. The shifts have been incredible and although we certainly had our fair share of obstacles with COVID, it propelled us into making changes and exploring new ways to extend The Wellness Refinery’s reach.

Tell us more about your at-home smoothie kits!

Absolutely! Our at-home kits help you to bring our smoothie blends to the comfort of your own home. When you order a kit, you’ll receive four different smoothies pre-portioned and ready to blend. All you have to do is add your liquid of choice and a little bit of ice if you like a thicker smoothie. It’s perfect for the individual who loves a variety of smoothies for breakfast throughout the week but doesn’t want to load up on all of the ingredients, adaptogenic and herbal powders.  All kits can be ordered through our online site with a one-day pre-order minimum.

If you want to test out one of our latest smoothie recipes, you can download the recipe to our Tropical Green Smoothie.

What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

An infrared sauna has a whole host of benefits ranging from detoxification and muscle recovery to immune support. What most people don’t know is that an infrared sauna heats the body before it heats the air, which helps the body to increase its core temperature and promote a deep detoxifying sweat. It also helps to circulate oxygen-rich blood to sore or aching muscles for pain relief.

A raised core body temperature can also induce a fever in the body to trigger an immune-like response to fight off any infection within the body. This, of course, is a great added benefit to help keep the immune system strong to fight the cold, flu, or even COVID*. Other benefits of the infrared sauna include melatonin production to promote a restful night’s sleep, skin purification with the physical exfoliation of intense sweating, and weight loss.

*Not scientifically proven to cure COVID, only an immune-boosting benefit overall!

What are your top tips for practicing self-care at home?

Gratitude & affirmation practice

i am everything card deck

i am everything card deck

Right now, it’s so easy to get caught up in the negativity of the world in our day today. Implementing a simple practice of writing down three things you’re grateful for at the start or end of the day can help you flip your perspective and give thanks for all that is going right for you at the moment! Personally, I always love tying in our I Am Everything affirmation card deck to focus on a certain theme, enforce positivity, and bring on confidence as I move about my day.

Meal planning or food prep

Having a veggie-packed meal planned for a few nights during the week or even prepping some veggies to include with your next takeout meal will be sure that you’re still getting all the good stuff like vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytochemicals, antioxidants, without adding extra work to your schedule throughout the week.

Movement

Keeping up with a daily movement routine will help to get the blood pumping, the muscles moving, and endorphins flowing. I’m not saying you have to outfit the latest and greatest at-home gym but scheduling a midday walk break or signing-up for that virtual class with your friends before the workday can make a difference in your mental health.

Sleep!

A great sleep routine is often underrated. Winding down at the end of the night goes a long way when aiming to get a restful sleep. I like to incorporate teas with sleepy herbs like chamomile and catnip (yes! The same catnip your cat plays with). The routine of brewing a cup of tea signals that you’re getting ready to hit the hay and helps your body to get into a restful state. When I’m not feeling a cup of tea, I use our Sleep Juice by Organic Olivia for a quick and powerful dose of sleep-inducing herbs to settle down.
